Clinical Coding
We recognise that high quality data is crucial for informing strategic and local decisions for capacity and service planning as well as understanding clinical performance and outcomes. What is clinical coding?
- Clinical governance: Clinical audits, risk analysis and mortality data.
- Benchmarking: Reducing variations, model hospital, HED, Dr Foster, service line reporting.
- Quality improvement: Improving patient pathways, clinical research, treatment effectiveness.
- Commissioning: Casemix planning, the development of new services.
- Epidemiology: Health trends, aetiological studies, clinical indicators.
- Financial flows: National tariff income and cost analysis.
High quality clinical coding audits and training will help to:
- Provide financial protection by identifying potential omissions and their causes.
- Avert challenges by detecting and managing over coding.
- Confirm compliance with national standards requirements.
- Drive quality improvement.
- Measure performance against the Data Security and Protection Toolkit and the Cyber Assessment Framework (DSPT CAF)
The NHSPS supports the way NHS organisations are funded. Acute trusts are ‘paid’ for the number and complexity of patient encounters, so it is crucial data submitted to the payment scheme is timely and accurate.
Clinical coding courses
Our nationally accredited clinical coding training covers:
- Clinical coding standards for those entering the profession.
- Clinical coding refreshers, which every clinical coder has to complete every three years.
- National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) revision workshops for clinical coders seeking to become Accredited Clinical Coders (ACC).
We can also provide training to meet DPST (Data Security and Protection Toolkit) CAF (Cyber Assessment Framework) requirement E4.b Clinical Coding.

Clinical coding audits
We conduct independent clinical coding audits for our host trust, other NHS health trusts, third sector organisations and healthcare agencies.
Audits can be done internally or externally, by speciality, for individual coders or for whole organisations, as part of the DPST CAF framework, or for quality assurance.
